Posted: 03 Oct 2010 12:50 PM PDT

For us, part of the joys of traveling is being able to enjoy different types of food that you don't have back home. Vegetarian travelers may sometimes find it difficult to set their sights on a destination that offers dishes to their liking. Today, we'll be giving you over ten different cities that are vegetarian friendly and have a lot of tasty foods to tickle your palate. For those who enjoy eating meat but are looking for new, foods to try, why not visit these places and indulge in some healthy eating? Not only will it be good for taste buds, it will benefit your health as well.

Vancouver

For food lovers who like to shop for their own ingredients and prepare their meals at home, the various food markets in Vancouver are just the thing for you. The markets also sell pre cooked food that you can eat right then and there. Restaurants selling vegetarian food are also common in this city. The Naam restaurant can satisfy your late night food cravings any day of the week; while the Jamaican Pizza Jerk offers finger licking snacks such as vegan pizza. There are also restaurants that serve more exotic and ethnic foods. The city's many fusion restaurants offer quite a number of experimental dishes as well.

Kyoto

During time the Shoguns ruled Japan, the population subsisted mainly on vegetarian dishes. Through the years however, the Japanese learned to incorporate meat in their cuisine and have since then perfected the art of preparing meat (try their world famous Kobe beef, if you can afford it). While the country may no longer be dominantly vegetarian, the city of Kyoto still features lots of delicious vegetarian meals inspired by Zen Buddhism. Visit any temple in the city and there is sure to be a restaurant or eatery that served multi course meals locally known as shojin ryori. Feast on eggplant, root vegetables, yuba which is basically tofu skin, and daikon. Aside from being healthy and delicious, the Japanese have a unique way of presenting their dishes like works of art. So meticulously prepared are the meals that sometimes, it seems a shame that you should eat them in just one bite!

San Francisco

Watching a Giants game is never the same without a hotdog. For vegetarians who have never really understood this concept, you can buy a tofu dog and bring it with you on your next game and not only see but also taste the difference for yourself. Other restaurants in the Bay Area seem to let out their creative side by coming up with meals that cater especially to vegetarians. Take Maggie Mudd, for example, which serves vegan ice cream. Millenium, on the other hand, is a good place to check out if you're feeling like you can eat enough food for a dozen people.

Singapore

Singapore may be a small country, but it is home to many different cultures including Chinese and also Chinese. Those who follow a strictly vegetarian diet will have no difficulty choosing from the assortment of dishes being served here. There are lots of food courts that you will find all over the city selling affordable vegetarian dishes. You can also check out Little India for some exotic and authentic vegetarian cuisine. The Komala Vilas also known as chain restaurants offer vegetarian meals that are not restricted to curry. If you want to delve further in your quest for vegetarian cuisine Indian style, you can also check out Sagar Ratna or Saravana Bhavan.

Mexico City

What's interesting about Mexico City is that their culinary tradition has always included lots of vegetables that do a lot for our body's health and well being. Corn, chilis, lime and beans are common ingredients in Mexican dishes. Not only are they quite filling, they're also full of flavor that each bite is an explosion of different tastes in your mouth.

Sydney

Australia may be famous for serving relatively uncommon meats on the table such as kangaroo, but the city of Sydney has a number of beachside cafes and restaurants that offer non meat alternatives. The Australians have also learned to love vegetarian Chinese dishes, especially the ones that feature mock meat. Lots of dishes here are basically soy based infused with all the meaty goodness without the actual meat. We definitely love the vegetarian dim sum served in restaurants; we can't get enough of the vegetable filled rice cakes and tofu with black bean sauce. In Sydney, you can even get some vegetarian food to go at Laurie's Vegetarian Take Away.

Taipei

Thanks to Buddhist influences, the city of Taipei in Thailand now offers its residents and tourists alike with lots of vegetarian meals that taste like different types of meat but don't actually contain the meat itself. These dishes are made mainly out of tofu or soy protein that can be cooked in virtually any style. Over the years, Buddhists have developed soy to come up with dishes that taste like stewed beef, and even stir fried seafood such as squid. Another smaller city that has lots of vegetarian restaurants and also food stalls is Taichung. Here, you can eat to your heart's content and not have to worry about a thing.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the second to the largest city in the country of Thailand. Vegetarians can spend long vacations here without worrying of running out of food choices. There are plenty of open-air or al fresco eateries that you can check out that are located quite near the city proper. What's good about this place is that if you're starving, all you have to do is keep an eye out for the big yellow banners with the unmistakable Chinese character that means "jay", otherwise known as vegetarian. The Khao Soi is a noodle dish that usually comes with meat, but you can order one without the meat and enjoy the curry sauce flavored with coconut, plus the lime, pickles and shallots.

Portland, Oregon

Vegetarian dishes can be found everywhere in Portland, from restaurants to stores and even food carts. Notable places to check out are Food Fight and Paradox Palace Café. Have a spooky doughnut at Voo Doo Doughnuts to serve as your dessert.

London

The select few who have learned to love the acquired taste of British food can now rejoice because these days, the city of London offers lots of vegetarian meals that you can choose from. The classic shepherd's pie can now be had sans the meat; and in case you were wondering, yes, they also sell meatless sausage. You can even have some chickpea tagine or masala dosa. In recent years, lots of restaurants that only serve vegetarian food have begun to appear in the London culinary scene. Those who are interested can check out the yummy fusion fare over at Manna, Riverside Vegetaria, or perhaps The Gate.

If you're a traveler itching for a taste of adventure off the tourist spots of another country, Colombia is the perfect destination for you.  Here are the top 10 spots in Colombia you might want to check out before the truckloads of tourists arrive in packs:

Desierto de La Tatacoa. Just like the Badlands National Park that can be found in South Dakota, the Tatacoa Desert of hot Colombia remains invisible to the rest of the world.  The desert stretches to over 330 sq km which happens to be the biggest prehistoric graveyard of the country.  If you plan to visit this undiscovered and unspoiled beauty, it can be reached via the town of Neiva or even from Villaviega.  Be sure to bring your campaign gears.

Llanos Orientales. The Llanos Orientales can be reached by traveling south from Bogota.  The Colombian Pantanal in this area is home to a wide variety of wild life. The famous Meta River and three different lakes— Mozambique, La Conquista, and Santoya can be found here too.  If you fancy horses, there are some horseback riding activities you can try or simply explore the unspoiled beauty of this place.

San Gil. The town of San Gil was made famous by no other than the proprietor of Macondo Hostel, Shaun who was born in Australia.  Since then, it's fast becoming a favorite destination of tourists.  This small town is located right in the heart of Santander, the adventure capital of the Colombia.  San Gil is simply the best spot for adventure travelers because of its famous rapids, abseiling, caving trails, and paragliding spots.

Salento. Ah, coffee lovers will surely love this place.  While everyone seems to know and have tasted the world-famous Colombia coffee, the fact remains that only few people have heard of the "Colombian Cafetero" which the is country's official coffee area.  The Colombian Cafetero can be found in Quindion, Salento which allows you to see the everyday of rural Colombia.  Other places of interest include the Valle de Cocora and the national trees of Colombia that reaches up to 60m.

La Guajira. They say that the most amazing sunsets in Colombia can be found in Lag Guajira, but where exactly is it?  It rests on the coastline of Colombia just before you reach Venezuela.  La Guajira is a department (a group of municipalities) of Colombia and occupies the Guajira Peninsula.  The last Colombian railway can be found here and it functions to transport salt and some coal from Cabo de la Vela to different parts of Colombia.

Amacayacu National Park. In the native language of Quecha, Amacayacu literally means "River of the Hamocs."   The Amacayacu National Park is a massive land that consists of almost 150 kinds of mammals, a wide variety of reptiles, and almost 500 kinds of birds.  For those seeking for adventure, you can walk through high rope bridges or ride a canoe to explore the 293,500 hectares of area.

Mompos. If you're a fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, head to Mompos and see for yourself why this place is really a rare treasure.  Though Mompos is laid back compared to the other places we've mentioned, this is where you can find filigree silver in low, low prices.  Imagine sipping fresh juices before reclining to sleep beside the river of Magdalena.

The festivals in Caldas and Valledupar. Of all the festivals in Colombia, there are two notables ones.  The first important festival is the Carnaval de Riosucio that is held in Caldas in January every two years. It is also known as the Carnaval del Diablo or the Devil's Carnaval where evil-like statues thrive and people drink the traditional beverage called the  Guarapo which is made from fermented maize.  The second notable festival is the Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata in Valledupar which takes place in April every year.  This festival celebrates the music of vallenato and where people compete for the title of the next Vallenato King.
