Terror threat in Europe, travel alert issued to Americans

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 05:45 AM PDT

On Sunday, US State Department urges Americans to take general travel precautions amid concerns over terror strikes in Europe by Al-Qaeda and other Pakistani militant groups.

According to a news emerged in New York Times about a possible Mumbai style terror attack in European cities, Americans are asked to stay alert and aware of their surroundings and move away from any unattended object. Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy says the alert is not meant to avoid travel Europe but to take common-sense precautions at public places.

The indications are said to be analyzed, cross-referenced and rely heavily on a series of elements.

Amid concerns, Britain's Foreign and Commonwealth office also issues similar warning to its citizens in France and Germany. Experts say that this could have an impact on the already debt ridden European economy.

In a statement, German interior minister said that the decision to issue the alert comes after a warning regarding the terror strikes received by the US state department.

Concerning the national security, countries like France and Spain already have a high level of security. Both France and US agreed on the same ground regarding general recommendations.

Recently, in September, worldwide alerts have been issued after the pastor threatened to burn Quran, the Islamic Holy book. Also, in the past alerts were issued for US citizens regarding the 2004 Al-Qaeda bombings of commuter trains in Spain and public transport bombing in London, England in 2005.

US recommend citizens to register their travel plans with the US consulate and get informed on general security issues.

Kidnapping of tourist in Acapulco, Mexico

Posted: 05 Oct 2010 04:34 AM PDT

On the 30th of September 2010, Thursday a tourist bus was abducted by an armed gang in Acapulco, Mexico. The incident resulted in the kidnapping of around 20 men.

This incident of kidnapping of 20 tourists happened during the Thursday afternoon at a very posh area of Acapulco, around which a number of tourist hotels, discos and shops are located. The place is located by the beach line and is extremely popular amongst the tourists as well as the local public.

The tourists who have been kidnapped came from a western state of Michoacan. Michoacan is yet another major force trying to gain control over the region surrounded by Acapulco, it is also a point of drug war in Mexico.

Soon after the incident, police was not in any position to comment anything.

It is not something new for Acapulco, as the drug gangs have been trying to take over the strategic coastal port of Acapulco. They keep on terrorizing the resorts because the troops had killed their local cartel kingpin in December 2009.

This violence has been adversely affecting the Mexico tourism industry. The growth of tourism has been hampered to a great extent. Basically, tourism is the most important source of foreign currency for Mexico. And since 2008 the business has battered in Mexico due to global recession. The drug violence in Mexico is the biggest threat for the country and it has lead to the death of more than 29,000 people.

On 2nd of October 2010, Saturday a small plane crashed near the Nazca Lines of Peru. The plane was carrying 6 passengers, 4 of them were British tourists and 2 were Peruvians. The police reported that all of them have died.
Amongst the 4 Britons, 3 of them were men and 1 woman. Both the Peruvians were men-one pilot and the other co-pilot.

Nazca police had reported that the Cessna plane crashed due to an engine trouble. The plane crashed into the field, the police along with firefighters are trying to recover the dead bodies from the plane.

The sight of the crash i.e. Nazca Lines is a mysterious place that was etched into a desert by an indigenous group hundreds of years ago. In fact it is amongst the leading tourist attractions in Peru and has been identified as UNESCO World Heritage site.

The Nazca lines are a scenic view from air and many tourists go for a 30 minutes air flight above the region. The area is 240 miles from southeastern part of Lima.

This is not the first crash at this place, before this there have been instances of this kind for which the supervisors are held responsible. It is said that the planes that make flights are old.

In 2006 a similar crash took place in which 3 Chileans and 4 Peruvians lost their lives. And in 2008 five French tourists died in such a crash but the pilot managed to survive.
